RAST Connectors Explained: Design, Ratings, and Applications

RAST connectors were originally developed for the household-appliance market and have since become a widely used standardized connection system. Early versions used crimp contacts, while many current designs use insulation displacement contact (IDC) technology. IDC termination can simplify assembly by eliminating separate wire-stripping and crimping steps while helping reduce wiring and mating errors.

Depending on the connector design, a RAST plug can mate directly with a printed circuit board edge or with a PCB-mounted header. Contacts are preassembled in the housing, reducing the number of loose components that must be handled during production and lowering the risk of wires being terminated in the wrong position.

Origins of the RAST standard

The RAST standard originated in the 1980s through a European working group of household-appliance manufacturers and connector suppliers. Participants included Bosch, Miele, Siemens Home Appliances, AEG/Electrolux, Bauknecht/Whirlpool, Lumberg, Molex, AMP/TE Connectivity, Stocko Contact, and Wieland Electric.

The group aimed to prevent incorrect mating, reduce wiring errors during product assembly, and consolidate multiple connections into a smaller number of connector housings and cable assemblies. Although RAST was developed for white goods, it later expanded into heating equipment, industrial systems, and automotive applications. Flame-resistant designs developed for unattended appliances can also be relevant where automotive systems require robust material performance.

RAST is derived from the German term Raster Anschluss Steck Technik, commonly translated as “grid connection plug technology.”

Design considerations

  • Standardization: The German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (ZVEI) oversaw development of the RAST connector system, with the standard established in 1986. It has been widely adopted internationally, although adoption in North America developed more slowly.
  • Pitch designation: The number in a RAST designation normally indicates contact pitch. RAST 5 uses a 5 mm pitch, while RAST 2.5 uses a 2.5 mm pitch.
  • Current ratings: RAST 5 products can support currents up to 16 A. RAST 2.5 products are generally intended for signals and lower-current loads up to 4 A. Exact ratings depend on the connector design, conductor, operating conditions, and applicable approvals.
  • Size and spacing: Compact RAST 2.5 connectors are useful where size and weight are constrained, including some electric-vehicle applications. RAST 2.5 contacts are arranged more closely, while RAST 5 contacts are separated in individual enclosed chambers. Populating every other position in a RAST 2.5 layout can provide an effective 5 mm spacing where greater electrical clearance is required.
  • Orientation: Mating headers are available in vertical and right-angle configurations.
  • Mounting options: In addition to through-hole PCB versions, many suppliers offer surface-mount RAST connectors.
  • Keying and identification: RAST housings are often white, but other colors may be available for identification in complex wiring systems. Polarizing features, side locks, housing locks, and keyed PCB footprints help prevent incorrect mating.
  • Mating methods: A connector may mate directly with a PCB edge or with a dedicated header.
  • Assembly: RAST products can support manual and automated production. Compatible surface-mount versions can be installed using lead-free reflow processes to reduce assembly time.
  • Cable architecture: Consolidating circuits into RAST housings can reduce the number of separate connectors and cable bundles. Some products also support ribbon cable.
  • Compliance options: Depending on the supplier and product series, available qualifications may include RoHS, glow-wire, UL, CSA, and VDE.

Markets and applications

RAST connectors are used across consumer, automotive, and industrial markets.

In household appliances, typical applications include washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, and small appliances. Automotive uses include HVAC systems, electric-vehicle subsystems, interior lighting, headlamps, and sensors. In industrial equipment, RAST connectors can provide direct or indirect connections for sensors, switches, actuators, and motor-control wiring.
